Through our home school group we were presented with an opportunity to hatch our own chicken eggs. We have been wanting hens for a while now so we could have fresh eggs so we jumped at the opportunity.
We were handed an incubator, 12 different eggs, and instructions. We had to keep the temperature and humidity inside the incubator at specific temps and we had to turn the eggs 3x a day. We ended up cheating and borrowed a automatic egg turner though :)
After candling them around day 14 I though we were only going to get one chicken. 4 eggs were not fertilized and the other ones I just wasn't sure about. One day 19, after the kids went to bed, I was at the computer and started hearing noises. I finally realized that the eggs were chirping! It was amazing!
The next morning there were a couple eggs with a small hole then by the time the kids woke up the first egg looked like this.....
We watched the whole hatching process...
When the chick finally came out it flopped all over the incubator finally resting on its friends...
It was amazing hearing all the chirps coming from the eggs and seeing the chicks find the other eggs holes. It seemed like they wanted to help each other.
It ended up being an all day event. The last one was hatched around 9pm.
They stayed in the incubator for about 36hrs until they were completely dry and fluffy and we put them in their temporary home until they are old enough to go in their coop.
It was an amazing experience, and they are so stinkin cute right now!
